Brilliant snowshoeing and snowboarding opportunities

Saint-Lary is a dynamic winter sports destination and the skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing is tremendous. The domain has been excellently planned to suit the needs of skiers of different abilities. (This was a key issue in our decision to set up a skiing holiday base here). Skiing at St Lary spreads over a total area of 700ha. It’s divided into three distinct areas: Saint-Lary 1700, 1900 and 2400. These are linked by a variety of ski lifts - navigation from one to the other is easy..

Learning to ski
With the highest concentration of green slopes, 1700 is the best place to begin your learning. However there are also good beginner slopes at 1900, if the rest of the family want to be ripping it up in the snowpark. There are good ski schools and mountain restaurants in both parts of the resort.

Skiing for intermediates
Saint-Lary is an excellent resort for intermediate skiers, providing the ideal venue to take your skiing to another level. The blue and red runs constitute the backbone of the ski area and allow you to make the most of this wonderful setting. There is a challenging variety of skiing - different terrains, trees, the snowparks and mogulfields - to push your skiing that little bit further. Why not test your speed on the Mirabelle? It’s a piste of 3.6 km, one of the longest in the Pyrenees.

Advanced skiing
A variety of steep blacks throughout the resort will get even the best skiers in shape and, with a challenging bumps run and a stade de slalom, Saint-Lary can take your skiing to new heights.
We’re excited about the off piste potential this season, and it looks very promising. So in the trees or off in the bowls around Lac de L’Oule, there will be a lot of fresh tracks come December.

Ski lessons
We work with a small team of excellent ski instructors who are full time mountain professionals. We make sure that the instructors teach to high standards but focus on having fun too. You learn quicker when you are enjoying yourself. Some of our own staff are also qualified ski instructors and they teach groups too.

Ski Touring
Why not try ski touring? The Guides’ Office has a complete programme which would take you away from the pistes and into the untouched powder of the Neouvielle Nature Reserve. Perhaps you could even do the trip over to our other resort, Barèges.

Snowboarding
Saint Lary has not forgotten the contribution of snowboarders to the winter sports industry over the last decade and has rewarded them with one of the best snow boarding areas of the Pyrenees. On piste, off piste and throughout the domain, snowboarders will find what they are looking for. There is a specifically maintained freeride area with two snowparks, one for beginners, and one for the pros. The constant music and upbeat atmosphere will help get you in the mood for some big air!

Snowshoeing
There are some very pretty local snowshoeing routes near St Lary and away from the noise of the resort. An extensive snowshoeing programme is organized by the Guides’ Office in Saint Lary, so if you fancy a rest from skiing or want to get out into the wilds of the mountains, away from the crowds and the lifts, try a day exploring the Pyrenees on foot, tracking wildlife with a knowledgeable local guide. It will be an experience you won’t forget.

Restaurants
There are a number of restaurants and cafés on the slopes that provide drinks, hot food and snacks. Try the local speciality, Garbure. Somewhere between a soup and a stew based on duck, ham and cabbage, this is a dish to keep energy levels high for the afternoon!

Top features of St Lary’s skiing:

- Moguls, slalom, snowpark, freeride area and tree skiing, plus first rate snowshoeing and snowboarding.

- Huge variety of red and blue pistes for intermediates to cruise.

- Lunch in a choice of great restaurants and cafes.

- The Chalet de l’Oule, by the side of the lake will provide you with an unforgettable backdrop of the Neouvielle Nature reserve.

- Sledging track for the little ones and a weekly snowman competition.

- La Mirabelle at 3.6 km and a vertical drop of over 700 metres - one of the longest ski runs in the Pyrenees.

- The Glacier Lift which carries 800 people an hour finishes at a final altitude of 2515 metres.

- ‘Jardin de neige’ and a piste de luge as well as the aptly named ‘Kidpark’. This area is directly linked with the cable car from the village.

Our St Lary Staff and Services
Our permanent overseas team consists of five experienced staff, all of whom are keen skiers and snowboarders. Between them, they hold a variety of outdoors qualifications. Their job is to make sure that your holiday runs smoothly and that you get the most out of it. But we won’t ‘rep’ you into doing things you don’t want to do. They’ll help as much or as little as you want, but are on hand if you have any problems.

This year is our second in Saint Lary, although we have been running in Barèges – another Pyrenean resort, for fourteen years. However we have been enjoying the skiing in St Lary ourselves for a while now and have sometimes even walked on ski touring skis from Barèges to St Lary – a walk that takes most of the day.

Except on some fly drive weeks in low season, we will have staff based in St Lary to run transfers, offer ski leading and support your holiday arrangements.

Most parents have little choice on their holiday dates but many of us have experienced just how busy all resorts can be over the February half term. In order to combat this, we have special arrangements to get our customers to the ski area.

Ski trips and more throughout Europe and beyond

Don’t let our name fool you: as well as Pyrenees trips, we can take you to the Alps, South Tyrol, Dolomites, Tatra Mountains and even further. In France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Poland, Slovenia…even Mongolia.

Downhill skiing, alpine skiing, off piste, telemark skiing, ski tours, ski touring snowshoeing, trekking, mountaineering, expedition training, motorcycle tours, expedition training, walking, activity holidays, canyoning, mountain biking, white water rafting, road touring, cultural tours and study – chances are we have just what you’re looking for. We can also arrange all accommodation, from a hotel or B&B to a self-catering apartment or gite.

Can’t see what you’re after? We’d be happy to arrange a bespoke trip for you.

Parents are welcome to come along for fun but the programme is paced for kids’ groups. We have outlined our programme for this season’s half term below. Your family can join free but please book places in advance by telephone, fax or email. ALL Participants must be able to ski a blue piste confidently.

Half Term Week Kid's Skiing !

Sunday: Ski games around the pistes. Our ski leaders take kids on appropriately graded pistes looking for fun and (safe) things to do, places to jump from and to slalom through.

Tuesday: Can you ski llike a monkey or a goldfish ? Individual and team games and competitions.

Friday: Human slalom day. We teach kids how to ski in teams through a slalom course made up of other kids. Great fun, adults can join in too as long as they behave !
