... an all time PMT favourite with great peaks to bag every day

-

Silvretta Alps Traverse: 12th April, 2008

-

Traverse the Swiss - Austrian border along the Silvretta mountains

-

A classic ski traverse with the opportunity to climb a different summit each day

-

Climb the Piz Buin, highest peak in the Silvretta and a classic winter route

The final climb to Piz Buin

The Silvretta Alps span the Austrian / Swiss border. The highest mountain in the range is the famous Piz Buin (3312m) and this tour includes an ascent to its summit.

Our route is planned around a six day traverse linking five huts - some in Austria, others in Switzerland. There is a choice of more or less demanding routes between each hut and your guide chooses a route to best suit you and your group’s abilities and aspirations. For some people this might include climbing to the summits of the GemsSpitzter, Dreilanderspitz (3197m), Hinter Jamspitz (3156m), Silvrettahorn (3244m) or the Piz Buin (3312m) itself; other groups might enjoy seeking out off the beaten track routes over the less well known glaciers to find untracked, pristine snow and solitude.

This tour is justifiably one of our most popular and is suitable for skiers looking for
moderate glacial terrain with the opportunity to “peak bag” each day. The mountains and glaciers are spectacular and all the mountain huts are very comfortable as is typical of this area of Switzerland and Austria.

“The scenery was absolutely breathtaking"” - Jan and David McNess

OUTLINE ITINERARY

DAY 1 - Fly to Friedrichshafen, transfer to Galtur
Arrival in Friedrichshafen (Germany) and minibus transfer to the Hotel Galturerhof in the village of Galtur. We meet up in the evening to collect hire gear, chat with our guides and prepare for the week ahead.

DAY 2 - Ischgl to the Heidelberger hut
We start the tour by using the ski lifts of the Ischgl ski area to get easy access to the Pauline and then traverse to Zeblasjoch and on to the Swiss border at Fuorcla Val Gronda. Then we have a long gentle descent to the Heidelberger hut where we stay for the first night of the tour.

Day 3 - Heidelberger to Jamtal Hut
We set off from the hut and attempt to reach the summit of Breite Krone (3079m). Then we make a short traverse back to the Austrian border at the Kronenjoch and ski down to the Austrian Jamtal hut.

Day 4 - Jamtal to Wiesbadener Hut
From the Jamtal we head to the Tirolerscharte across the Jamtalferner (glacier). From the pass we head down across the Tirolergletscher to the Wiesbadener hut.

Day 5 - Wiesbadener - Piz Buin - Silvretta Hut

We head back now to Switzerland. This is the longest and most demanding day on the tour. We leave the hut early to allow enough time to make an attempt on the summit of the Piz Buin (3312m), the highest point of the tour. From the summit we head down the west face of the mountain to the Fuorcla dal Cunfin and then down the spectacular Silvrettagletscher and finally on to the Silvretta hut in Switzerland.

Day 6 - Silvretta to Saarbrucker Hut
From the Silvretta hut we climb back to the Austrian border at the Winterlucke pass. Then we ski down onto the Litzner glacier and then on to the Saarbrucker hut.

Day 7 - Saarbrucker Hut to Seehorn

For the last day of the tour we will attempt to reach the summit of the Seehorn (3124m). Then we ski a long descent back towards the hut before skiing on down through the valleys to a small roadhead at Vermuntstausee (lake) where our transport back to Galtur will be waiting for us.

Day 8 – Travel home from Austria

We drive you back to Friedrichshafen by minibus to connect with flights

Please Note: This itinerary may be altered if conditions, weather forecasts or the overall fitness of the group are judged to put the safety of the group at risk. Pyrenean Mountain Tour Guides reserve the right to make changes to the itinerary without notice. These changes will be explained to the group as and when they occur.

Maps and Guidebooks
Your guide will carry all the maps that the group needs but you may want to plan or record your journey on your own copy. The most practical maps for you to carry are:

“Silvretta Alps”, 1/25,000, published by the Austrian Tourist Board.

For a specific ski touring book covering the Silvretta Alps read Alpine Ski Moutainerring, Vloume 2, Central and Eastern Alps, by Bill O'Conner.

You can order maps and books online at: www.mapsworldwide.co.uk, www.amazon.com, or buy them at Stanford books in London.

Fitness and Skiing Standard

This tour requires that you should be able to walk uphill for up to 3.5 hours a day over moderate but varied terrain, gaining an average of 900 metres. Ski descents are on wide slopes with plenty of space. This is an ideal tour with those with little touring experience, but equally good for experienced tourers wishing to visit the area even though it is not technically demanding.

Group Size: 2 groups of 7 people.

Group 1: DAF Scale:D1:A1:F1

Group 2: DAF Scale:D2:A2:F2
