| OUTLINE
ITINERARY
DAY 1 -
Fly to Friedrichshafen,
transfer to Sulden
Arrival in Friedrichshafen and minibus
transfer to Sulden.
We meet up in the evening to collect hire gear, chat with
our guides and prepare for the week ahead.
DAY
2
- Valle Madriccio
We leave Sulden and use the cable car up to
the ski area and then a further chairlift to the top of the
resort. After a short ski we walk over the Passo del Madriccio
and ski down through this secluded valley to the Zufalhutte
refuge. There is an optional local ascent and ski for those
who have the energy in the afternoon.
DAY
3
- Zufalhutte
We leave our heavy gear at the hut today and
set off with just light packs across the valley to the foot
of the Serena glacier. Then we move up along the glacier to
the un-named pass at 3229m. Fantastic views, a great picnic
spot and time to switch the skis into downhill mode for the
long ski back to the Zufalhutte.
DAY
4
-
to the Casati hut
A long day ahead of us as we climb the 1200
metres to the Casati hut at the top of the Zufal glacier.
This requires a steady but constant pace over stunning glacial
terrain. We spend all day climbing to the hut, where there
is a warm welcome and great food.
DAY
5
- Monte Cevadale
Day five is one of the best days out on skis
you can imagine. We are already at high altitude at the Casati
hut and from there we skin across the glacier to the Cima
Cevedale at 3757m. Then we skin along the lengthy ridge that
joins Cevedale to the Palon de la Mere (3685m) before the
steep ski down to the Branca hut well below us in the valley.
DAY
6
- the San Matteo
The biggest single climb of the trip takes
us from the Branca hut to the steep summit of the San Matteo
peak - 3678m. This 1350m climb is on steep demanding glacial
terrain and requires good technique - as well as a head for
heights. The ski back down to Branca is fantastic.
But
from the Branca we pick up all our gear for a further 300
metre climb to the Pizzini hut where we spend the last night
of the tour.
DAY
7
- Sulden Spitze
- Sulden
From Pizzini we climb at first on skis and
then on foot back to the Casati hut (and if we have time we'll
pop in for a coffee !). Then we head up to the simple Sulden
Spitze peak before making the final descent back down through
the seracs on the Sulden glaciers and skiing to the cable
car station where we started the trip. We head back to a comfortable
hotel for a well earned rest !
DAY 8 - Back to Friedrichshafen
for flights home
Transfer to Friedrichshafen
Airport for connections back to the UK.
Please
Note: This itinerary may be altered if conditions, weather
forecasts or the overall fitness of the group are judged to

Maps
and Guidebooks
Your guide will carry all the maps
that the group needs but you may want to plan
or record your journey on your own copy. The most
practical map for you to carry is:
“Ortler-Cevedale-Ortlergebeit”
, 1/25,000, published by the Tabacco Carta Topografica.
For
a specific ski touring book covering the Ortler
read Alpine Ski Moutaineering, Volume
2, Central and Eastern Alps, by Bill O'Conner.
You
can order maps and books online at: www.mapsworldwide.co.uk,
www.amazon.com,
or buy them at Stanford books in London.
Fitness and Skiing Standard
This tour requires that you should
be able to walk uphill for up to 4-5 hours a day
over moderate but varied terrain, gaining an average
of 1200 metres. Ski descents are on wide slopes
with plenty of space. This is an ideal second
or third ski tour but equally good for experienced
tourers wishing to visit the area and bag some
good peaks - even though it is not technically
demanding.
Group
Size: 2 groups of 7 people.
