We have moved our tour to the Bernina Alps at the eastern end of Switzerland forward by two or three weeks this year. Each day there is a peak to climb to and great ski descents. As with our other May bank holiday ski tours, this trip is aimed at good skiers who have already completed several ski tours and who are confident with ice axe and crampons. The tour sets out from Potresina, just up the road from St Moritz.

During the tour we ski from the following peaks:

•Piz Palu, 3905m
•Pic Morteratsch, 3751m
•Peak Chaputchin, 3386m
•Piz Zupo
•Pic Argent
•the Berninna, 4049m

The week ends with a classic 2400 metre descent from the summit of the Berninna peak down north facing slopes through complicated crevassed terrain before gaining the Vadret de Morteratsch once more and skiing out to the road head at Morteratcsh itself.

“this ski trip certainly beat my previous experiences of ski mountaineering” - John

OUTLINE ITINERARY

DAY 1 - Fly to Friedrichshafen
Arrival in Friedrichshafen (Germany) and minibus transfer to Pontresina. We meet up in the evening to collect hire gear, chat with our guides and prepare for the week ahead.

Day 2 - Piz Palu 3905m
We use the cable car from the little village of Diavolessa to the top station at Sass Queder 2973m. Then we climb on skins to the summit of the Piz Palu at 3901m via an intricate route up the Vadret Pers glacier. From the summit we ski down through north facing bowls and along the Vadret da Morteratsch glacier to the Boval refuge.

Day 3 - Pic Morteratsch 3751m
From the Boval hut we head up to the steep summit of the Morteratsch before a complicated route down to the Vadret da Tschierva glacier and the Tschierva refuge hanging above the glacier.

Day 4 - Peak Chaputchin 3386m
After another climb up to the Chaputchin peak we cross complicated glacier terrain to get to the Coax refuge at the base of the enormous hanging glaciers below the Gluschaint, Muongia, Sella and Dschimels peaks.

Day 5 - Refuge Marinelli in Italy

We cross the border via the Fourcla de la Sella and ski across the Vadretta di Scercen glacier to the Rifugio Marinelli from where there are great views of the Berninna peak itself.

Day 6 - Piz Zupo or Pic Argent
We move closer to the Bernina peak today as we climb to the Refugio Marco e Rosa on its south face. We take the opportunity to climb and ski either the Piz Zupo 3996m or the Pic Argent 3945m on the way

Day 7 - The Berninna 4049m
From the Marco e Rosa refuge we climb to the summit of the Berninna peak at 4020m. After the climb we are faced with a classic north facing ski down through complicated crevassed terrain before gaining the Vadret de Morteratsch once more and skiing out to the road head at Morteratcsh itself. A ski descent of 2400m.

Day 8 – Travel home from Austria
We drive you back to Friedrichshafen by minibus to connect with flights

Maps and Guidebooks
Your guide will carry all the maps that the group needs but you may want to plan or record your journey on your own copy. The most practical maps for you to carry are:

Landerskarte der Schweiz, sheet 1227, Piz Berninna and sheet 1278, La Rosa both at 1/25.000

All published by the Ufficio Federale di Topografia, in Switzerland.

For a general ski touring book read Bill O' Connor's Alpine Ski Mountaineering, Volume 1, Western Alps. Or if you can find a copy his original ski touring textbook read Ski Mountaineering. Both are excellent.

You can order maps and books online at: www.mapsworldwide.co.uk, www.amazon.com, or buy them at Stanford books in London.

Fitness and Skiing Standard
This tour requires that you should be able to walk uphill for up to 5 hours gaining an average of 1200 metres. On one day as much as 1500 metres is climbed. Ski descents are generally quite steep and exposed and there will be few tracks. You will need to climb on crampons to reach summits and you must be comfortable with an ice axe. This tour is demanding and only suitable for experienced tourers with good fitness.

General Notes: This tour is at high altitude and this will affect your performance if you are not fit.

Group Size: 1 group of 6 people

DAF Scale:D2:A2:F2
