Part ski trip, part cultural experience: Eagles, Kasakhs, horses, yurts and skis!

Another first for Pyrenean Mountain Tours as we link up with Tenger Ekh Nara to provide a unique ski touring experience. This is an expedition to the heart of the Mongolian Atlai mountains, a massif which exceeds 4300 metres. The unique ski touring experience is but a part of the overall journey across the vast desert expanses of Mongolias Western regions where the Kazakh nomads will welcome you into their rich culture and hospitality. Accompanied by a team of local guides you will experience first hand how they hunt with eagles.

During the expedition into these harsh lands you will experience the astounding comfort of traditional yurts decorated with splendid carpets and weavings as we make our way across the country towards the Altai mountain range. There we will enjoy 5 days of ski touring wilderness from our base camp at 3100 metres of which one will certainly be Kuiten(4370 metres), the highest in Mongolia.

The Altai(meaning ‘golden’ in the mongolian language) are a range which enjoy permanent snow on its summits which often exceed 4000 metres. The landscape is reminiscent of Ladakh or Tibet, almost entirely without trees. The region is made up of a Kazakh population who have kept their native tongue at the expense of the Mongolian language. The ski approaches are often long on the vast expanse of glaciers, but the jagged ridges and summits, coupled with long open descents are more than ample reward for the physical efforts!

The return from this area is a fascinating journey once again and this time we will stop at the foot of Mount Tsambagarav(4202 metres), for one final day of ski mountaineering.

Ski Tour Itinerary

Day 1 and 2- Flights from London to Ulan Bator. Transfer to hotel and guided visit to the town and the National Museum

Day 3- Internal flight to Olgii
Capital of Bayan Olgi, the most Westerly province of Mongolia. Here we meet with our Kazakh interpreter who will accompany throughout our trip. From Olgi we will depart in jeeps as we head off towards the Tavan Bogd massif of the Altai. We will eat with a Kazake family at home and spend the night in tents

Day 4- The journey in jeep continues into the mountains
Today we will have the opportunity to meet a kazakh hunter who uses his eagle to hunt foxes and rabbits, a tradition which goes back some 2000 years. We hope to camp this night on the banks of the Tsagaan Gol, Mongolias second largest river.

Day5- Trek towards the mountains
Today is a 16km trk towards our base camp at the edge of the Potanine glacier which stretches for 23 kilometres from the highest peaks. The base camp is in magnificent surroundings, facing an impressive massif of snow covered peaks which are not dissimilar to the Bernese Oberland

Days 6-10- The ski touring!
We will now enjoy 5 days of ski touring from our base camp where we will be sleeping in high quality mountain tents and dining in the yurts which have been set up. Climbing in between 1000 and 1400 metres per day, we have a choice of many peaks to ski.

Here is a list of some possibilities:

-Malchin(4207m): this summit which borders Russia provides a straightforward warm up of around 1000 metres ascent. The skiing is sustained in 30 degree slopes.
-Kuiten(4370m): this summit which borders china is the highest in all of Mongolia. It provides an exceptional view over the Chinese range and involves 1350 metres of vertical.
- Naran(north ridge) (3998m): This mountain provides a steep and technical north facing descent at 40 degrees.
- Tour du Naraan: a straighforward and exceptionally beautiful circuit.

Day 10- Heading back down
We pack up our ski kit for a few days and head back down to the nomads camp.

Day 11- Back to Olgii
Weaving our way through herds of goats, sheep, yaks and horses we return to Olgi for showers and an evening spent by the side of the river.

Day 12- Journey towards Mount Tsambarov

The trip today will be puncutated with stops in yurts to taste the local youghurts and teas. Mongolian hospitality is not just a myth! Tonight is spent at a camp at the foot of Mount Tsambarov, a summit which is always snow covered. We camp at around 2650n metres.

Day 13- Mount Tsambarov(4202m)

After a very early start the minibus will help us reach around 2900 metres where we will begin our climb on skis. The 13000 metre climb is rewarded with a 1600 metre descent. Several routes are possible.

After the skiing we continue our minibus trip towards Olgi, although we return on a different route which provides a far more mineral environment, We spend the night on the banks of an unforgettable turqoise lake.

Day 14- Return trip to Olgi

Our journey ends on Olgi today as we prepare for our return plane to Ulan Bator and onwards to the UK

Day 15- Return flights from Ulan Bator
