Iceland. The Peninsula of the Trolls

To ski down the mountains of the peninsular of the Trolls (Trollaskagi) dropping all the way to the Arctic Ocean in Icelands almost permanent spring light is an unforgettable experience. You can ski routes here, between 800 and 1,500 metres of height loss, comparable to any of the better known Alpine descents. The empty mountains, omnipresent sea and virgin snow make it a paradise for ski tourers , alpine or telemark. Overhead in Spring there will be flights of migratory birds. Every evening you can bathe in the warm spring near our gite accommodation.

Day One: arrive at Keflavik airport to meet our French UIAGM guide Richard. Then a five to six hour transfer to our accommodation. Evening briefing over a dinner at the gite.

Days two to seven: Each evening the group will decide on tomorrow’s route, based on suggestions from the guide. There are plenty of itineraries to choose from: Einstakafjall, Vatnsdalur, Lagheidi. Some of the climbs open onto classic descents, such as Kaldbakur (1170 metres), an amazing run all the way to the sea. On one day we can take the boat from Hedinsfjordur to run along steep cliffs, the nesting place of millions of birds, to an uninhabited fjord. From there we work our way back to the Olafsfjordur fjord across very varied terrain, pretty summits and good descents. If the weather allows a highlight of the week will be an ascent of the Klaengsholsdalur coumbe to a pass at 1185 metres. Then  the log descent to either Skridudalur or Lambardalur. 15 kilometres of skiing for 1200 metres of climbing!

Day Eight: start early to drive back to the airport for the flight home.

This trip is categorised as ‘moderate’ in terms of skiing ability. If you would like to know more about our plans for Iceland, please contact Wendy on 01635 297209 and watch this web page for extra details to be posted in the very near future.
