... a great week of tuition and off piste skiing

-

Gressoney - Alagna; 7th March 2009

-

a week based in the beautiful village of Gressoney St Jean

-

huge variety of routes with different characteristics

-

stunning skiing on huge glaciers

We have expanded our off-piste skiing tuition programme and now also offer an exciting week in the Monte Rosa ski area at the head of the Aosta valley in the Italian Alps. You spend the week in a small and friendly hotel in Gressoney St Jean (at the centre of the network) and each day set out using the ski lifts to access miles of off piste skiing. There are very few pistes so most of the mountain is Off-Piste only!

The week is structured in two parts. The first day is taught by a ski instructor in an intense interactive and fun way. The aim is to build your off piste confidence and increase your range of ski skills off piste. Then you head off with a UIAGM mountain guide for five days. He or she will use this second part of the week to coach each participant on a more individual basis. However, we also aim to get in miles of good, continous, off-piste skiing every day.

Each day you return to the comfort of your hotel and great Italian food and hospitality.

“Brilliant week ! thanks so much for all the organising and hard work.”
- David Booth

OUTLINE ITINERARY - Gressoney, Monte Rosa Ski Area

DAY 1 - Fly to Turin

Arrival at Turin airport and transfer by minibus to Gressoney. Meeting in Gressoney hotel in the evening for briefing and welcome dinner. Equipment hire sorted out for those who need it.

DAY 2 - Warm up Ski Day
We spend the first day of the week skiing with a ski instructor who will make sure that you have a thorough warm up before assessing your skiing skills and planning your tuition. We spend the first day working on common ski weaknesses and sorting these out in off-piste conditions.

DAYs 3,4,5,6,7 - Off Piste Skiing with UIAGM Guide
You ski with a UIAGM mountain guide each day and try to put in to practice the skills you have honed over the previous day's skiing. The routes you ski will be tailored to the group and decided on the day in conjunction with the group.

HELISKI Options
The group will have the option of using a Helicopter for one day during this week to access some of the highest skiing from the Monta Rosa. We don't pre plan this route or include it in the basic cost of your holiday as it is very weather dependant. Budget on about £85 per person for this day - payable locally.

DAY TOUR Options
For one or possibly two days in the week we will use skins to climb to a more remote route. If you have skins and climbing adaptors for your alpine skis (or have touring skis) bring those with you. Alternatively these are available for hire in the resort.

DAY 8 - Transfer to Turin and back to UK
Transfer to Turin airport for return flights home.

Please Note: This itinerary may need to be altered if snow conditions, weather forecasts or the overall fitness of the group are judged to put the safety of the group at risk. Pyrenean Mountain Tour guides reserve the right to make changes to the itinerary without notice. These changes will be explained to the group as and when they occur.

.....background preparation

Fitness and Skiing Standard
These skiing courses are aimed at good alpine skiers who are confident skiing at a good pace in all conditions on a red piste using parallel turns. You should also be confident about skiing down a black piste (although not necessarily stylishly....) and ideally you will have ventured off - piste now and again. You need to be fit enough to ski for six hours a day.

Questions about this tour ? Email Jessica for help.

Mountain Guides and Leaders
These two courses will be led and taught by local UIAGM guides and BASI ski instructors.
